Dr Kum is a pioneer in Asia for Minimally Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopic Surgery) for hernias. He is the President of the Singapore chapter of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA)
He has performed more than 1000 hernia operations since 1990. In 1994, he was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan Scholarship to Cologne, Germany, to train in Advance Laparoscopic Surgery. Since then, he has given live demonstration of complex laparoscopic surgery operations in more than 10 countries and has been invited to speak in more than 50 international conferences. He has also published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals and 7 book chapters.
He was an Associate Professor of Surgery in the National University of Singapore till 2003, when he joined Susan Lim Surgery- a well established group practice of senior consultant surgeons from the University.
Recently, Dr Kum has pioneered N.O.T.E.S. Natural Orifice Transluminal Surgery and SILS single incision laparoscopic surgery.
He will also be the Congress President for the 10th Asia Pacific Congress of Endoscopic Surgery in 2011, Singapore that will be held in the Resorts World Integrated Resort. Sentosa.
