With America's recent healthcare reform legislation, it is expected that 32 million Americans will gain access to healthcare coverage in the coming years. The challenge however lies in the supply side of the equation, that is, the healthcare professionals.

Indeed, as the baby boomers become senior citizens, there will be a global rapid increase in demand for healthcare which will not be adequately met by trained manpower. Who will perform the blood pressure checks, ECGs, diagnose the cancers and monitor the diabetes? Family physicians who are on the front lines of this surge in demand, are already I short supply, as are nurses.

One obvious way to address the shortfall would be to make primary-care medicine a more attractive field - not just for physicians but also for nurses. In addition to tackling the issue of who will deliver the services, is the issue of how and where services are provided. The integration of medicine and technology platforms and smart innovation will enable the emergence of new business models, which will facilitate a shift of some of the more routine, basic monitoring procedures to the homes, and empower patients to take some charge of their health and their lives. Two of our companies, Medical Files Online and I Mobile Health have evolved business models to cater to the changing medical scene.

Medical Files Online aims to provide patients with the ability to store their medical appointments and records on a mobile device, and i Mobile Health is focused on the delivery of smartphones to monitor heart rhythm, blood glucose and other physiologic parameters.

We will be releasing a series of health related apps and educational games for the iPhone and iPad at the end of the summer on the iTunes store!
