The Centre for Robotic Surgery commenced its clinical program in October 2004 when Dr Susan Lim, Dr Kum Cheng Kiong and Dr Christopher Cheng performed Singapore's first Da Vinci Robotic Cholecystectomy at the Singapore General Hospital.

Since then, they have gone on to pioneer and develop the clinical program at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Dr Susan Lim is the Chairman of Parkway's Centre for Robotic Surgery for Training and Research. Embracing this new technology is in line with the philosophy of Susan Lim Surgery and Centre for Robotic Surgery to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge technology.

This April 2008, Centre for Robotic Surgery performed its first live transmission of a laparoscopic general surgery operation between Singapore and Dubai.

This Event was part of the 2nd International Conference of Emirates Society of Laparo-Endoscopic Surgeons meeting held in Dubai.

The landmark live robotic transmission is very much in line with Centre for Robotic Surgery’s vision to both contribute and share its capabilities with Centre of Excellence overseas.

The value of robotic surgery is in procedures where there is a requirement for superior visualisation in 3D and 10x magnification, as well as enhanced dexterity with tremor filtration and 7 degrees of freedom of movement of the operating tools.

The Centre for Robotic Surgery has invested a significant amount of time and resources in the education and training of its senior surgeons, Dr Susan Lim and Dr Kum Cheng Kiong, in robotic surgical procedures.

Both Dr Susan Lim and Dr Kum Cheng Kiong have undergone three full training courses in robotic surgery at Santa Barbara, USA, April 2003; Sunnyvale, California, USA, September 2004 and Singapore, October 2004. The training is on-going as they continue to explore the clinical application of this fascinating technology.

This year 2006, Centre for Robotic Surgery in collaboration with Dr Suresh Nair, is pleased to offer 2 new procedures in the fields of Gyneacology, Robotic Myomectomy and Hysterectomy (see video clip below).

These new procedures are in addition to the existing Robotic Surgery applications in the fields of General Surgery and Urology, currently performed here.
