"Of interest, and in the news, it has just been reported that in addition to the BRCA1 and 2 genes, British scientists have found a few more common genetic factors linked to the risk of developing breast cancer.
Douglas Easton from Britain's University of Cambridge led the largest genome-wide analysis of breast cancer patients to date, scanning the gene maps of 16,536 patients, and found five new common gene variations which was reported in the journal Nature Genetics last week. This important discovery gives researchers a better understanding of the possible causes as well as new clues for developing better treatments.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in developed countries. Family history is a well-established risk factor. Having a close relative with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman's risk for the disease."
